Inclusion in Action – Part 1: What Does Real Inclusion Actually Mean?

If you ask ten people what inclusion means, you'll probably hear ten different answers.
Some will say it's making sure everyone is invited. Others will say it's providing accommodations or ensuring equal opportunities. Those are important parts of inclusion, but I believe true inclusion goes much deeper.

Real inclusion isn't simply about being present. It's about belonging. It's about contributing. It's about learning from one another. It's about creating communities where every person—regardless of age, ability, background, or life experience—is valued not only for who they are, but for the unique perspective they bring.
Take a moment to look at how our communities are organized.
Children often spend their time with children. Teenagers with teenagers. Adults with adults. People naturally gather with others who share similar interests, experiences, or abilities. There are good reasons for some of this, and specialized instruction or support can be valuable when it meets a specific need.
But it's worth asking an important question:
Are we creating enough opportunities for people with different experiences to truly learn, work, and grow together?

That question matters because the answer shapes the kind of communities we build.
When people rarely interact with others whose lives are different from their own, everyone misses something. We miss opportunities to challenge our assumptions, broaden our perspectives, and discover strengths we may never have recognized otherwise.
Some of life's greatest lessons come from people whose experiences are nothing like our own.
A child can remind an adult to stay curious.
A retiree can teach the value of patience and perspective.
An athlete can demonstrate discipline.
An artist can inspire creativity.
Someone who communicates differently can teach us to listen more carefully.
Someone who has faced extraordinary challenges can redefine what perseverance truly means.
Every person has something to teach, and every person has something to learn.
The strongest communities are not built because everyone is the same. They are built because people with different perspectives, talents, and experiences come together around a shared purpose.
This isn't just an inspiring idea—it's supported by experience and research. Diverse teams often solve problems more effectively, generate more creative ideas, and make better decisions because they bring a wider range of perspectives to the table. Diversity expands what's possible. Inclusion gives those perspectives the opportunity to shape the outcome.
Of course, diversity alone isn't enough.

People can occupy the same space without ever truly connecting.
Inclusion happens when people work toward a common goal. When they volunteer together. Create together. Exercise together. Learn together. Serve together. Build together.
Shared experiences transform strangers into teammates, neighbors into friends, and differences into strengths.
As communities become more divided into separate groups and experiences, those opportunities naturally become less common. The result isn't necessarily intentional, but it can leave people with fewer chances to build meaningful relationships across generations, abilities, and backgrounds.
When those connections become rare, everyone loses.
Not because anyone intended it that way, but because growth so often happens when different perspectives come together.
This philosophy is at the heart of Empower Village.
Our vision isn't simply to offer programs. It's to create a community where people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds learn alongside one another through meaningful experiences. Whether we're working on a farm, creating art, exercising, volunteering, developing leadership skills, or simply sharing a conversation, the goal is the same: to build relationships that help all of us grow.
Throughout this month, we'll explore why inclusion is more than a philosophy. We'll look at how diverse communities strengthen problem-solving, encourage innovation, build empathy, and create deeper connections. We'll also examine how shared experiences help people discover strengths in themselves and in others that might otherwise remain hidden.
Because inclusion isn't about making room for one more person.
It's about recognizing that every person makes the community stronger simply by being part of it.

Reflection
Think about someone who has had a lasting impact on your life.
Were they your age? Did they share your background or life experience?
Or did they challenge the way you thought because they saw the world differently?
The people who help us grow are often the ones who broaden our perspective.
Perhaps that's what real inclusion has always been about.

Amazing article! Absolutely true! We’re all in it together and when we pull together as a team, celebrating differences and strengths, it’s such a wonderful thing! Thanks so much for creating Empower Village ❤️
