Ocean Township, NJ – On Sunday, July 27th, Empower Sports Network proudly hosted its First Annual Pickleball Tournament at Ocean Township’s Park Avenue Tennis Center. This exciting event brought together 15 teams of enthusiastic pickleball players and raised thousands of dollars to su
pport the organization’s mission of providing inclusive athletic opportunities for children and adults with special needs.
The tournament marked a significant milestone for Empower Sports Network as it was the nonprofit’s inaugural fundraising tournament. This event set the foundation for future programs and initiatives while raising awareness about the importance of adaptive sports for individuals with special needs. It also fostered a sense of community, bringing together athletes, families, and supporters who believe in the power of sports to create lasting change.
The funds raised will directly support the launch of new adaptive sports programs, including the Winter Pickleball Program set to begin in 2025.
“This tournament was more than just a game—it was about building community, raising awareness, and creating opportunities through inclusive athletics,” said Sam Kiningham, Founder and Executive Director of Empower Sports Network. “We’re thrilled with the turnout and the excitement, and we’re already planning our second tournament for the spring.”

Erin Nicole, a participant, shared her experience of the event:“Had a great time playing in a pickleball fundraiser this afternoon benefiting Empower Sports Network! It’s a supportive space where individuals with special needs grow through sports, fitness, and goal-driven teamwork that prepares them for life and work. It was my mom’s first time ever stepping onto a pickleball court—and we came in second place! We had 7 wins and 3 losses.”
The event would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors LifeFlow Program, Studlete, Educating Across the Spectrum, Squatter Potters, and G&M Trophy of West Long Branch. Empower Sports Network also extends its thanks to the many volunteers, including Jon Kalnes, Joe Teresi, Mary Kiningham, Abby Dwyer, Debbie Ingram, and Michelle Ruscavage, and to Park Avenue Tennis Center for hosting the event.
Looking ahead, Empower Sports Network’s Adaptive Pickleball Program will launch this winter, with even more inclusive athletic programs on the horizon. The second Annual Pickleball Tournament is already being planned for Spring 2026.
